Dear Friends

Thank you for your prayerful support for the work of Langham Preaching around the world. This week we feature Ethiopia, a country significantly impacted by unexpected ethnic violence in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic: Dr. Frew Tamrat writes:

We have been passing through some difficult challenges the past three weeks— challenges that almost brought our country to civil war and genocide. On the night of June 29, a popular singer and political activist from one of the largest tribes of Ethiopia was murdered. Immediately following this incident, the country entered into unprecedented violence and political unrest based on ethnic conflict. Over 200 people were killed and thousands of homes and hundreds of components of government infrastructure were destroyed throughout the country. In order to curb the violence and stop the killing of innocent people by angry mobs, the government shut down the internet. The government has now partially reopened the internet but still blocks some social media sites. Transportation is still blocked to some parts of the country.

Pray for lasting peace and stability for Ethiopia. Even though the government has imprisoned the people suspected of inciting the violence the situation remains tense and people fear a resurgence of violence.

Pray for the families that have lost loved ones. The thousands of victims of the ethnic violence whose homes were burned are sheltering in church compounds and police stations. Please pray that their lives will quickly return to normal.

Pray for continued fruitfulness in the ministry of Langham Preaching and the Ethiopian church. Social media, now restricted, has been the main vehicle for ministry.

Pray for our nation in the midst of the pandemic. The death rate is rising, the economy is suffering, churches and religious institutions are facing extreme financial pressure and we do not know when school will resume.

Bolivia: A response from one of the seminar participants from last week’s session: ‘In spite of all that is happening in the world, we cannot deny the hunger that still exists to come to know God’s word more deeply. We have met as an escuelita (Preaching Club) from the start of the lockdown via Zoom. We are now doing the Level 2 seminar via Zoom and even though not the same as being together we have been able to keep going. We are grateful to Langham for being sensitive to our need to progress and not stagnate in the midst of these difficulties.’

Liberia: A Refresher for 20 Preaching Club participants will physically take place July 31 in Brewerville with Matthew Gonkerwon (coordinator), Ola Adegemi, Rev. Opoku and Michael Clement facilitating. Pray that all in attendance will be ‘encouraged and strengthened in the Word’.’

Thanks for your prayers!
